With the trade deadline over, it’s time to discuss who the biggest winners and the biggest losers were. Some teams were quiet and shouldn’t have been, while other teams seem to have reshaped their entire roster. Let’s dive in:

Biggest Winners:

  • Miami Marlins
  • Tampa Bay Rays
  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Toronto Blue Jays

Arguably the most successful team at the deadline was the Miami Marlins who traded away 11 players before the deadline, but don’t let that number fool you. The haul of prospects that Miami got will inevitably reshape this system. The biggest names leaving are Jazz Chisholm Jr., Luis Arraez (although not at the deadline), Bryan De La Cruz, Tanner Scott, A.J. Puk, and Trevor Rodgers. What they got back is the big story, the Marlins acquired Connor Norby, Kyle Stowers, Deyvison De Los Santos, Adam Mazur, Jay Beshears, Robby Snelling and Graham Pauley- just to name a few. De Los Santos, Norby, and Stowers will all make an impact almost immediately for the big league club.

Rays Notable Trades:

Acquired: 3B Christopher Morel, RHP Hunter Bigge, RHP Ty Johnson, OF Dylan Carlson, RHP Brody Hopkins, OF Aidan Smith, RHP Dylan Lesko, OF Homer Bush Jr., C J.D. Gonzalez, RHP Jackson Baumeister, OF Matthew Etzel, OF Mac Horvath, RHP Michael Flynn, and SS Gregory Barrios

Traded Away: 3B Isaac Paredes, RHP Shawn Armstrong, OF Randy Arozarena, RHP Jason Adam, RHP Zach Eflin, RHP Aaron Civale, and SS Amed Rosario

Dodgers Notable Trades:

Acquired: RHP Jack Flaherty, SS Tommy Edman, RHP Oliver Gonzalez, 3B Miguel Vargas, SS Alexander Albertus, SS Jeral Perez, SS Amed Rosario, Kevin Kiermaier, SS Moises Bolivar

Traded Away: C Thayron Liranzo, SS Trey Sweeney, RHP Michael Flynn, RHP Ryan Yarbrough, LHP James Paxton

Blue Jays Notable Trades:

Acquired RHP Jake Bloss, OF Joey Loperfido, 2B Will Wagner, SS Cutter Coffey, SS Eddinson Paulino, RHP Gilberto Batista, SS Josh Rivera, OF Yohendrick Pinango, OF Jonatan Clase, C Jacob Sharp, OF RJ Schreck, 2B Charles McAdoo, RHP Ryan Yarbrough

Traded Away: LHP Yusei Kikuchi, C Danny Jansen, Yimi García, RHP Nate Pearson, 3B Justin Turner, 3B Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Kevin Kiermaier

Joey Loperfido, sorry Astros fans

Biggest Losers:

  • Chicago White Sox
  • Houston Astros
  • Minnesota Twins
  • New York Yankees

Moving on to the losers, Chris Getz is quite possibly the worst GM in all of baseball- which is only fitting given he is employed by the worst team in baseball. The White Sox “big splash” this deadline came in the form of a three team trade between them, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. This trade saw the Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham go to the Cardinals while Michael Kopech went to the Dodgers. The Sox received Miguel Vargas, Alexander Albertus, Jeral Perez and a player to be named later or cash considerations from the Dodgers. After this the Sox sent Paul Dejong to Kansas City for RHP Jarold Rosado and shipped off Eloy Jimenez to the Orioles for  LHP Trey McGough. The Sox did not get enough quantity or quality of prospects at this deadline. They also held onto Garret Crochet and Luis Robert, both of whom would’ve gotten a decent return. The Sox are on pace to be the worst team in MLB history and at this point I want to see it.

Now, the Astros are on this list for one reason and one reason only- the over pay for LHP Yusei Kikuchi. The Astros sent RHP Jake Bloss, OF Joey Loperfido and 2B Will Wagner to the Blue Jays for a fat serving of mid.

Meanwhile, the Twins and Yankees are in the same boat. Yes the Yanks went and got Jazz Chisholm and Mark Leiter Jr., however their starting rotation is brutal and their lineup is atrocious outside of Judge and Soto (now Jazz as well). This is the Oriole’s chance to run away with the division in my opinion.

The Twins, on the other hand, did nothing. The Royals went out and got better and the Guardians are 23 games over .500. The Twins appear to be relying on what they got and will be competing with Kansas City for what looks like second place in the AL Central- unless something crazy happens.

Should’ve Done More:

  • Los Angeles Angels
  • Chicago Cubs
  • San Francisco Giants
  • Colorado Rockies

The Angels are a joke of a franchise we all know this, the Giants sold off Jorge Soler for absolutely no reason, and the Rockies missed their chance to get some prospects for Ryan McMahon and Elias Diaz. I choose not to dive into those as much because I need to touch on the Cubs and this is already a pretty long blog.

The Cubs are pissing me off. They had the chance to go get something, anything, for Jameson Taillon, Mike Tauchman, and even Cody Bellinger. I will say I am completely okay with the Parades for Morel swap (this was touched on in my other blog here). Losing Hunter Bigge kind of sucked but overall not bad. What is bad is Jed Hoyer believing that a team that has done nothing the past two years will somehow magically get it together. Listen, I get it, the ENTIRE team is having a down year, but still. Do you know what the definition of insanity is Jed?

I think the Cubs building off of PCA, Busch, and Parades right now is a good start. With Ballesteros, Caissie, Triantos, and Shaw knocking at the door I have to tell myself to stay patient. But for right now, being a Chicago sports fan sucks. When does football start?
